So, I\u2019m writing this to clarify things. I\u2019ll include multiple sources, so if you don\u2019t believe me, feel free to check the links.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">The current government has an agenda to allow discrimination against queer people (among many others) under the guise of \u2018religious freedom\u2019 and &#8216;protecting&#8217; religious people. What they actually support is abhorrent and would include things like letting religious schools expel queer students and fire queer teachers, and just generally letting religious institutions (such as housing services, employment programs, and more\u2026) discriminate against queer people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">This is a good look at the myriad other ways people would be discriminated against if the Coalition had their way, written by Janet Rice:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><a title=\"Janet Rice\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/GreenMemes\/posts\/7115826801821051\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25481\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dingo.news\/voice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Senator-Janet-Rice.jpg?resize=623%2C177&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"623\" height=\"177\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dingo.news\/voice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Senator-Janet-Rice.jpg 623w, https:\/\/dingo.news\/voice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Senator-Janet-Rice-480x136.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 623px, 100vw\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">In anticipation for the government putting their horrible plans up to a vote, the Labor Party had a caucus meeting. In that meeting, Labor decided that they would propose amendments to the Religious Discrimination Bill, and that if their amendments failed to pass in the House of Representatives that they would vote for it anyway. Several Labor MPs moved that Labor oppose the bill if they couldn\u2019t get their amendment through, but those Labor MPs \u2018lost on the voices\u2019 and so Labor\u2019s decision was made.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">The above (and some info below) is evidenced here:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/live\/2022\/feb\/09\/australia-politics-news-live-brittany-jenkins-grace-tame-scott-morrison-parliament-coronavirus-covid-omicron-weather\">Lower house sits late to continue religious discrimination bill debate \u2013 as it happened<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">On the night of the debate, there were basically two relevant bills. The Religious Discrimination Bill and the Human Rights Legislation Amendment. Labor put up several amendments to the Religious Discrimination Bill. These would have: protected students, made it so the \u2018statement of belief\u2019 clause wouldn\u2019t override already existing state laws, prevented the discrimination of those in aged care services, and banned religious vilification.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">All of Labor\u2019s amendments to the bill failed, as can be seen in the following three links to the parliament website:<\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"height: 74px; width: 48.8432%; border-collapse: collapse;\" cellpadding=\"10\">\n<tbody>\n<tr style=\"height: 25px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 100%; height: 25px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" title=\"Division Number 804\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aph.gov.au\/Parliamentary_Business\/Chamber_documents\/HoR\/Divisions\/details?id=1661&amp;fbclid=IwAR0paF4yW2oRuDkZINimZu6qXcGj2x09mlV5wZfAuVwB47pQDdl_Yk4_XQs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Division Number 804<\/a><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 24px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 100%; height: 24px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" title=\"Division Number 805\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aph.gov.au\/Parliamentary_Business\/Chamber_documents\/HoR\/Divisions\/details?id=1662&amp;fbclid=IwAR1XXws79p_Ft6Hk0WwDaXr6KB_9K0r_mpN76kTgXog26HdyQj7jx6-99-I\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Division Number 805<\/a><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 25px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 100%; height: 25px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><a title=\"Division Number 806\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aph.gov.au\/Parliamentary_Business\/Chamber_documents\/HoR\/Divisions\/details?id=1663&amp;fbclid=IwAR0pNgJcDsXf3ldkbgSBkDvkm3p78SsV0jzMpBiYQsS8Zq6r_ynFZ6dYnls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Division Number 806<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Following the failure of these amendments, the bill itself was put up to be voted on. Mr Fletcher (Liberal) moved that the bill be read a third time, a motion that would pass the bill in the House of Representatives and send it to the Senate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">The only MPs who opposed the bill were: Adam Bandt (Greens), Rebekha Sharkie (Centre Alliance), Bridget Archer (Liberal) and the three independents: Helen Haines, Zali Stegall, and Andrew Wilkie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">The Coalition, Labor, Bob Katter, and Craig Kelly supported the bill, with all that it entailed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">There were no Labor MPs who voted against it. Not Ged Kearney (my MP, member for Cooper). Not Peter Khalil (Member for Wills). Not Josh Burns (Member for Macnamara). Regardless of what they said in speeches, they refused to back it up by voting against the bill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">After the Religious Discrimination Bill had passed, the Human Rights Legislation Amendment Bill was up. This bill was to amend various discrimination acts Australia had passed over the years. An amendment to this bill, to protect students (and only students) from discrimination, was able to pass with the support of the Labor Party, 5 Liberal MPs, the 3 independents, Adam Bandt (Greens) and Rebekha Sharkie (Centre Alliance).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Evidence:<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #993300; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" title=\"Division Number 811\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aph.gov.au\/Parliamentary_Business\/Chamber_documents\/HoR\/Divisions\/details?id=1668&amp;fbclid=IwAR28UTvCnDqmz0qGaSUUFxWUxx5gpNR1655U5y8SvmkCXwnYnBy-U1mmAUg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Division Number 811<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Australian House of Representatives<\/strong> &#8211; <a title=\"Twitter link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AboutTheHouse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@AboutTheHouse<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><a title=\"The Religious Discrimination Bill 2021\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AboutTheHouse\/status\/1491457530224312321?fbclid=IwAR0tzDWHtfvbYpgFja0hn-pBRMWdznjW42uzwHiQxJQRDeLIOp09nbFb_JM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25486\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dingo.news\/voice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Australian-HoR.jpg?resize=500%2C219&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dingo.news\/voice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Australian-HoR.jpg 500w, https:\/\/dingo.news\/voice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Australian-HoR-480x210.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 500px, 100vw\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">The Coalition was unable to handle this (showing their true intention\u2026) and decided to shelve the whole thing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Following that, many proclaimed this as a victory for Labor. That they stood up for queer rights. This doesn\u2019t match up for the following reason.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">There is nothing in parliamentary process that prevents Labor from putting forward amendments, and then voting against the bill. That is to say, despite their amendments to the Religious Discrimination Bill failing, they could have voted against the bill. Rebekha Sharkie, Adam Bandt, and others did exactly that. As can be seen in the voting records listed above.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\">Furthermore, despite the bill being shelved, Labor has announced that they will introduce their own religious discrimination legislation, as seen here:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" title=\"Statement on Religious Discrimination Legislation\" href=\"https:\/\/anthonyalbanese.com.au\/media-centre\/statement-on-religious-discrimination-legislation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">&#8211; Statement on Religious Discrimination Legislation<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Albanese claims there that Labor will protect students and gives a somewhat wishy-washy sentence on the topic of teachers. But what about other religious institutions in Australia, such as the aforementioned housing services and employment programs? What about religious op shops? Should they be able to discriminate in the hiring of their staff? Not only did Labor\u2019s amendments not deal with these, Kristina Keneally made something very clear through omission recently on Insiders, as seen here:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"ose-x ose-uid-f57e4d2a365e2ad38a95dedf82f056d3 ose-embedpress-responsive\" style=\"width:600px; height:550px; max-height:550px; max-width:100%; display:inline-block;\" data-embed-type=\"Twitter\"><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"600\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">If Labor win the election, will they remove the ability of religious schools to to turn away LGBTIQ teachers and children?<br><br>&quot;It&#39;s straightforward with children, we think there are some slight complexities with teachers and staff,&quot; @KKeneally says.<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/Insiders?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Insiders<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/auspol?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#auspol<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/3U3pVRtKgy\">pic.twitter.com\/3U3pVRtKgy<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Insiders ABC (@InsidersABC) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/InsidersABC\/status\/1492628277030428672?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 12, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">She was asked a clear question on whether Labor, if they win the election, will give religious schools the ability to turn away queer teachers and students. Keneally was able to state, clearly, that they will protect queer students. But with teachers and other staff?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">She refused to say. Even when asked directly if religious schools should be able to hire and fire teachers on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity, she instead talked about the &#8216;complexities&#8217; of the situation. Here is a direct quote from the above video:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">\u201cWell, Labor also supports the right of religious schools, faith-based schools, to be able to hire staff, whether its teachers or other staff, that support the mission and the values of the school.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Keneally is clearly trying to frame it in a positive light, but it should be apparent what she\u2019s really saying here. If you want, just pretend it was Scott Morrison saying it about the Liberals.<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Labor doesn\u2019t support queer teachers. They don\u2019t seem to support any queer people who work for or have to interact with religious institutions. Except for students.<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">But here\u2019s the thing. Young queer people see the world around them. They see queer people suffering from discrimination and this has an impact on them. And queer kids will (lest tragedy strike, as it sadly so often does\u2026) become queer adults. They\u2019re not truly safe unless their future is safe too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">I&#8217;ve attached an image showing Labor&#8217;s voting record on the Religious Discrimination Bill. Not for any partisan reason. I would be happy with Labor (and the Coalition! though that&#8217;s a stretch) changing their stance.
