The article made reference to a quote from Rudd that blamed the <em>\u201cGreen Party\u2019s political opportunism in 2009-10\u201d<\/em> for Australia\u2019s lack of an emissions trading scheme.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Rudd, to put it mildly, was not pleased.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\"><em>\u201cWe on the centre-left who are committed to climate action have never let up on this fight,\u201d<\/em> he wrote. <em>\u201cBut what Woods seems to suggest is that, while we are fighting the conservatives for an actual policy outcome, we should lie down and accept the Greens making that task harder by flinging mud at us like cowards. How preposterous.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 20px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This came a day after<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/nsw\/endless-smoke-is-making-life-unbearable-in-northern-nsw-20191119-p53c21.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rudd wrote to <\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>The Sydney Morning Herald<\/em> to argue that criticism by NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet of Labor\u2019s stimulus during the global financial crisis was unfair. <em>\u201cFormer World Bank chief economist Joseph Stiglitz \u2014 a Nobel laureate \u2014 said it was \u2018one of the best-designed Keynesian stimulus packages of any country\u2019,\u201d<\/em> Rudd wrote. <em>\u201cTreasurers, even state treasurers, are supposed to know what they\u2019re talking about.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 20px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Then on Saturday, the&nbsp;UK\u2019s <em>The Independent<\/em> published<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/voices\/letters\/labour-broadband-jeremy-corbyn-australia-prime-mininster-kevin-rudd-a9213856.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rudd\u2019s response<\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">to a article likening Jeremy Corbyn\u2019s communications plan to his government\u2019s NBN. Of the latter, he wrote that <em>\u201ccosts have spun out of control after the totally botched \u2018redesign\u2019 by the conservatives, at the behest of Rupert Murdoch\u201d<\/em>, before declaring that comparing Australia\u2019s experience to Corbyn\u2019s plan was <em>\u201cfacile in the extreme\u201d.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And on Sunday, US democratic socialist magazine&nbsp;<em>Jacobin<\/em> published a<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacobinmag.com\/2019\/11\/a-letter-from-kevin-rudd-former-prime-minister-of-australia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter from Rudd<\/a> r<span style=\"color: #000000;\">esponding to an article alleging he had been scared off of an emissions trading scheme by then-opposition leader Tony Abbott\u2019s climbing approval rate. The author of the article, Rudd wrote, was <em>\u201ctotally wrong about my record on climate change,\u201d<\/em> adding that <em>\u201cthe option of a double-dissolution poll to help force the legislation through parliament remained a viable option for our government, right up to the day that Julia Gillard and her co-conspirators drew their knives\u201d.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">But this isn\u2019t the first time Rudd has taken to a media outlet\u2019s editorial section to set his record straight. Even before last week\u2019s quartet of letters, \u201cKevin Rudd, New York\u201d has had a number of missives published in Australian newspapers.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On November 8, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/national\/margaret-court-court-is-entitled-to-a-fair-go-from-australia-20191107-h1jfh8.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a letter was published<\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">across the Nine newspapers objecting to part of chief political correspondent David Crowe\u2019s column about Scott Morrison\u2019s take on progressivism. Rudd wrote of the column: <em>\u201cit is ludicrous to compare his half-baked attacks to my analysis of neoliberalism during the global financial crisis\u201d.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Two days earlier, News Corp\u2019s&nbsp;<em>The Australian<\/em> was carrying a letter from Rudd, adamant that his <em>\u201ccrackdown on thugs like Joe McDonald\u201d<\/em> at the CFMEU was not a <em>\u201cpolitically motivated sham\u201d<\/em>, as per an article in a previous edition of the paper.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On November 2, <em>The Canberra Times<\/em><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canberratimes.com.au\/story\/6470080\/rudd-defends-labor-response-to-the-global-financial-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> published<\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Rudd\u2019s defence&nbsp;of his government\u2019s economic strategy in the face of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canberratimes.com.au\/story\/6459088\/govt-can-offer-stimulus-keep-surplus-alp\/?cs=14231\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mathias Cormann\u2019s accusation<\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">that the ex-PM wasted money during the financial crisis. <em>\u201cThe conservatives\u2019 fetishisation of a budget surplus despite worrying economic portents exposes that they\u2019re all politics and no policy,<\/em>\u201d Rudd wrote. Stiglitz got another mention too.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">The Ruddbot also fired up over an October 23 article in the&nbsp;<em>Daily Telegraph<\/em>. <em>\u201cClaim does not compute\u201d,<\/em> he bleeped, in response to a reference to his government\u2019s school infrastructure program having <em>\u201cwasted potential \u2018billions&#8217;\u201d<\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">News Corp columnist Terry McCrann prompted a letter to the&nbsp;<em>Herald Sun<\/em> published October 17 to correct quotes attributed to the former PM which Rudd said were wrong. <em>\u201cWouldn\u2019t it be nice if an editor actually read Terrysaurus\u2019s ramblings before hitting publish?\u201d<\/em> he asked.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In September,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/politics\/federal\/letters-kevin-rudd-rebuts-stimulus-rebates-claim-20190923-p52u5g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rudd defended<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> his government\u2019s stimulus package in the <em>Financial Review<\/em> and chastised Scentre Group chief executive Peter Allan for swallowing <em>\u201cthe urban myth\u201d<\/em> that the tax rebates were funnelled <em>\u201cinto alcohol and pokies and big screen TVs basically\u201d.<\/em> He also sent a similar letter to <em>The Australian<\/em> on the same topic, published a week earlier.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And way back in February, Rudd threw himself into a sparring match over the NBN involving<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/policy\/letters-kevin-rudd-on-nbn-nab-crisis-and-franking-credit-debate-20190207-h1az7m\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">multiple <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/policy\/letters-kevin-rudd-responds-starting-the-boats-israel-and-water-wars-20190213-h1b7t6\">letters<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> to the <em>Australian Financial Review<\/em>, in which he accused senior writer John Kehoe and media and marketing editor Max Mason of being <em>\u201cpermanently captive to a deeply ideologically blinkered view\u201d.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">It isn\u2019t clear why Rudd is so intent on clearing his name at the moment, nor how he is keeping track of his mentions in fringe outlets like the&nbsp;<em>Jacobin&nbsp;<\/em>(does he have google alerts turned on for his name?).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">At this rate we anticipate his response to this article within the next 2-3 business days.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><a title=\"Kevin Rudd wants the last word Last week Crikey received a strongly worded letter from the former prime minister.
