He is a former secretary of the US Navy, a post he left in 2019 after running aground with the Trump administration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">But here\u2019s the rub: Spencer is also the global chair of Bondi Partners, the transnational consultancy set up by former treasurer Joe Hockey, soon after he ceased his role as Australia\u2019s ambassador in Washington DC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Spencer and Joe Hockey have been early movers when it comes to AUKUS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-29294\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dingo.news\/voice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Joe-Hockey-AUKUS-parasite.jpg?resize=742%2C426&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"742\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dingo.news\/voice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Joe-Hockey-AUKUS-parasite.jpg 742w, https:\/\/dingo.news\/voice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Joe-Hockey-AUKUS-parasite-480x276.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 742px, 100vw\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Former ambassador to the US, and Bondi Partners president Joe Hockey (Image: (dingofied) AAP\/Mick Tsikas)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Back in 2021, Bondi Partners teamed up with the American Chamber of Commerce in Australia (AmCham) to host a webinar titled \u201cAUKUS: Business Opportunities Beyond Submarines\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Proving that it\u2019s never too early to look for the defence dollar, AmCham and Bondi Partners held the event three months after Scott Morrison sprang the AUKUS announcement on Australia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Who knew that 18 months later the cost \u2014 and the attendant business opportunities \u2014 would soar to almost $370 billion?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">The Hockey group is well-positioned for the bonanza, having built its own small platoon of former defence and national security types.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">The Bondi team includes:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Mark Watson &#8211; senior national security \u201cexecutive\u201d at the Australian embassy in Washington. He was responsible for developing partnerships with US national security agencies<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Air vice-marshal (retired) Gavin Turnbull AM \u2014 former deputy chief of Air Force and Australia\u2019s air commander, where he oversaw the performance and strategic direction of the RAAF, Australian Defence Force and defence industry<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Gus McLachlan &#8211; a former major general with the Australian army responsible for capability in cyberspace, electronic warfare and command and control systems<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Air vice-marshal (retired) Peter Yates AM, CSC \u2014 former program manager for Defence\u2019s Enterprise Resource and Planning Project<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Rear admiral (retired) Mark Purcell AM &#8211; described by Bondi Partners as having experience with some of Defence Australia\u2019s \u201clargest and most complex acquisition and sustainment undertakings\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Bondi Partners has also picked up former politicians from both sides of the aisle, in the former of former Coalition MP Peter McGauran and former Queensland Labor premier Peter Beattie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">But none of these should overshadow the two big names at the front of the shop. Joe Hockey retains his title of \u201cambassador\u201d, despite having departed life on the taxpayer dollar three years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">There is more to Richard V Spencer, too. The former US Navy secretary\u2019s bio records that he is a managing director of Pallas Ventures, a private investment fund dedicated to growing dual-use technology companies. Pallas says it advises on \u201ccomplex national and international security dynamics\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">In a newspaper interview late last year, Spencer suggested that Australian investment in expanding US industrial capability to build submarines would help the US to deliver Australian submarines faster. The comments have proved prescient.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">According to the advance sizzle, Spencer\u2019s address to the National Press Club today is a sold-out event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">And why not?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">AUKUS is a big deal in all respects \u2014 and not the least for the card-carrying supporters of the NPC.
