And they warn fatal \u201cwet bulb\u201d events \u2013 where a combination of raw heat and humidity overwhelm the human body\u2019s ability to cool itself \u2013 will force populations to flee to cooler climates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cLet\u2019s be clear. And events over 40C shut down almost all human activity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Prolonged heat causes heat stroke and dehydration. But it also affects mental health. And that\u2019s before you consider the fallout on food production, water availability and air quality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">But add humidity and things can become fatal for even the most healthy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">\u201cThe wet-bulb temperature reflects humidity and is a method used to measure heat stress,\u201d the Australian researchers write in <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Study finds 2 billion people will struggle to survive in a warming world \u2013 and these parts of Australia are most vulnerable - Annabelle Workman &amp; color: #000000;\">The Nature study found that any further increase in the 1.2C global warming already being felt by the planet will significantly increase the number of humans exposed to temperature extremes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 20px; color: #000000;\">Last week, the World Meteorological Organisation predicted the very high probability that a warming of 1.5C will be exceeded within the next five years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;
