UPDATE<\/span><\/a>:<\/strong>Israel has released journalist Jeremy Loffredo, but is withholding his passport until Oct 20. The judge overseeing his case ordered him to remain in-country until then while police comb his phone for evidence of anti-Israel activity.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

American journalist Jeremy Loffredo has been arrested by Israel in the West Bank and reportedly charged with \u201caiding the enemy during wartime\u201d<\/em> for his reporting on the recent Iranian bombardment, according to his employers at The Grayzone.<\/span><\/p>\n

Iran launched a barrage of missiles at Israel on October 1, striking a number of military bases and facilities in response to the killings of Hamas and Hezbollah leaders. Israeli censors banned any reports of the damage the strikes may have inflicted.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI realize many Americans have a deep, overarching, unyielding love for the foreign country of Israel, but Jeremy Loffredo is an American and a journalist (a very good one), being imprisoned with no trial by Israel for his reporting. Maybe he deserves some consideration, too?<\/span>\u201d <\/em>said<\/span> Brazil-based journalist Glenn Greenwald<\/a><\/span>, highlighting Loffredo\u2019s case on Thursday.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Some of Loffredo\u2019s works for US-based outlet, The Grayzone. According to its editor, Max Blumenthal, the journalist\u2019s phone was confiscated after he was arrested by the Israeli military. Blumenthal\u2019s colleague Wyatt Reed said Loffredo had been \u201cbeaten, blindfolded, and taken to an Israeli military base.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Israeli outlet Ynet reported that Loffredo had been<\/span> charged<\/a><\/span> with \u201caiding the enemy during wartime and providing information to the enemy.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“He published the information openly and fully, without attempting to hide anything. If this information constitutes aiding the enemy, many other journalists in Israel, including Israeli reporters, should also be arrested, said Attorney Leah Tsemel who is representing him in his defense. “A spy would not have acted so publicly and transparently.” <\/span>
\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

In his last video report from Israel<\/a><\/span>, Loffredo shared footage recorded by Israelis as well as Arab Bedouin, allegedly showing the impact of at least ten Iranian missile strikes at the Nevatim airbase in the Negev. Some of the Bedouin showed the American reporter a piece of missile debris that had not been removed by the Israeli military.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Loffredo then drove to Tel Aviv and tracked down where an Iranian missile struck \u201cless than 1,000 feet\u201d<\/em> (300 meters) from the headquarters of Mossad, the Israeli intelligence agency, located in a residential district. His X profile has since been locked.<\/span><\/p>\n

In March 2023, when Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich was arrested and charged with espionage in Russia, the US government immediately declared him \u201cwrongfully detained.\u201d<\/em> President Joe Biden and most major media outlets declared that \u201cjournalism is not a crime\u201d<\/em> and demanded his immediate release. The State Department and the US embassy in Israel have yet to comment on the arrest of Loffredo.<\/span><\/p>\n

After Gershkovich was exchanged for several Russians detained in the West, Moscow made<\/span> public<\/a><\/span> video evidence showing the American being caught with a flash drive containing classified information on Russian weapons production.
