Issues such as the critical state of the Murray Darling Basin, a legal system which fails the public interest, governments dedicated to unlimited growth, increasingly deaf to their citizens and intent on driving the juggernaut of environmental destruction, are creating the foundations of massive social change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Social movements have always been great forces for social change.&nbsp;Equally, massive efforts to censor and thwart the forces of change, have resulted in governments and vested interests doing their best to keep the public ignorant of the destruction of life support systems.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Mainstream media has failed to bring governments to account \u2014 the traditional role of the fourth estate.&nbsp;The majority simply ensuring&nbsp;no environmental crises are given publicity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">But the damage is impacting local communities, creating exponential crises as people are aghast over the clear-felling, bulldozing and slaughter of wildlife in their bush havens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Here are a few of the many comments from concerned citizens on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/koalacrisis\/\">Koala Crisis Facebook page<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><em>Moreton Shire Council approved redevelopment of 22 hectares between Dobson Rd and Nairn Rd Morayfield. 100-year-old trees just felled, nothing standing. Kangaroos standing up right, just looking at the devastation. Koala in one of our trees this morning, another one yesterday.&nbsp; We will have a road full of dead koalas and kangaroos soon.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"bq01\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><em>Heartsick and sad at the utter devastation that is going on in our wonderful country. Our beautiful forests are being ripped out and the old growth has been lost forever. Our rivers and streams are polluted and the fish are dying in them. The habitats of our native creatures has been torn down and their corridors taken over by horrible urban sprawl. Our amazing unique wildlife is becoming extinct and still our government keeps selling us off and giving our assets away. Where is it all going to end? Will we become the next third world country? Or are we there already?&nbsp;If we keep putting governments into power who have no regard for our country, then the people who put them there have so much to answer for.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thevanishingriver.com.au\">The Darling River<\/a> is empty \u2014 not because of drought.&nbsp;The government and companies have pumped the whole thing out.&nbsp;People are suffering and don\u2019t know who to trust, they watch their lives, farms and lands fail and turn to dust.&nbsp;It\u2019s a rights violation of all forms of life.&nbsp;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Country towns without water, river systems no longer capable of sustaining Indigenous needs, drought-ridden agricultural lands,&nbsp;a desert continent gasping for life.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">No amount of lobbying, demonstrations&nbsp;and pleas to councils, local, state and federal governments prevent the damage.&nbsp;With extraordinarily limited access to courts, combined with the costs and lack of public interest lawyers, public interest rights are highly constrained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Scientists publicise their research demonstrating extremely serious and potentially irreversible damage to ecosystems \u2014 all ignored by governments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Meetings with premiers, ministers, politicians and staffers are nothing more than street theatre with no outcomes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">In May, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaticannews.va\/en\/pope\/news\/2019-05\/pope-francis-on-climate-change-time-is-of-the-essence.html\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Pope Francis<\/span><\/a>, at a meeting in response to climate change with the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, told finance ministers they have <em>\u201can issue of great importance for humanity and the whole of creation\u201d.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">In June, the <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.arrcc.org.au\/about\">Australian Religious Response to Climate Change<\/a><\/span>, representing 150 religious leaders from across the country, issued an <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220523210442\/https:\/\/www.arrcc.org.au\/_nofaithincoal_open_letter_to_pm_signed_by_153_faith_leaders\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">open letter<\/span><\/a> to Prime Minister Scott Morrison, urging the Government to act on climate change.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"embeddedContent oembed-provider- oembed-provider-twitter\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-align=\"none\" data-oembed=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/amustnews\/status\/1143274667551051776\" data-oembed_provider=\"twitter\" data-resizetype=\"noresize\" data-title=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/amustnews\/status\/1143274667551051776\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Not surprisingly, the concerns were ignored.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">With virtually no checks and balances, the only independent reports are coming from the auditor-generals&#8217; offices \u2014&nbsp;and these reports are also buried.&nbsp;The most recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.audit.nsw.gov.au\/media\/managing-native-vegetation\">NSW Audit Office Audit Report<\/a>, published in June, provides alarming evidence of the scale of political irresponsibility by the Coalition Government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.audit.nsw.gov.au\/media\/managing-native-vegetation\">report<\/a> examined how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lls.nsw.gov.au\/\">Local Land Services<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.environment.nsw.gov.au\/\">Office of Environment and&nbsp;Heritage<\/a> regulate and manage the clearing of native vegetation in rural areas following legislative reforms introduced in August 2017.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><em>The report found the clearing of native vegetation on rural land is not effectively regulated and managed.&nbsp;&nbsp; The processes supporting the regulatory framework are weak and there is no evidence based-assurance that clearing of native vegetation is carried out in accordance with approvals.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><em><em>Despite around 1,000 instances of unexplained clearing, over 500 reports to the environmental hotline each year and around 300 investigations in progress at any one time, there are few prosecutions, remediation orders and penalty notices for unlawful clearing.<\/em><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.org.au\/\">Nature Conservation Council<\/a> CEO Kate Smolski <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.org.au\/media-releases\/2019\/06\/code-based-land-clearing-is-a-failure-and-should-be-stopped\/\">says<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><em>&#8216;&#8221;Government data shows approvals have been granted for almost 280,000 hectares of bushland to be bulldozed under laws that let landholders decide for themselves whether the ecological harm of clearing is acceptable.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The NSW Audit Report has been largely ignored. There has been no&nbsp;comment&nbsp;from the Berejiklian Government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Why bother?&nbsp;Since Premier <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parliament.nsw.gov.au\/members\/Pages\/member-details.aspx?pk=21\">Gladys Berejiklian<\/a> took over from the equally anti-environment former Premier <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mike_Baird\">Mike Baird<\/a>, the devastation to the NSW&nbsp;environment has been nothing short of catastrophic.&nbsp;So too, has the level of censorship in the mainstream media.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"embeddedContent oembed-provider- oembed-provider-twitter\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-align=\"none\" data-oembed=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/QuollOz\/status\/1072658824572690437\" data-oembed_provider=\"twitter\" data-resizetype=\"noresize\" data-title=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/QuollOz\/status\/1072658824572690437\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">\u2014 Oz Quoll Conservancy (@QuollOz) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/QuollOz\/status\/1072658824572690437?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 12, 2018<\/a><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><script async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\"><\/script><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Similarly, the Queensland Auditor Office&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qao.qld.gov.au\/reports-resources\/conserving-threatened-species\">report<\/a>,&nbsp;&#8216;<em>Conserving Threatened Species 2018-19<\/em>&#8216;, received the same level of disinterest from the mainstream media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Here is an excerpt:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><em>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.des.qld.gov.au\/\">department<\/a> has no strategy or framework for conserving or managing threatened species.&nbsp;This is despite the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.qld.gov.au\/view\/pdf\/inforce\/2017-07-03\/act-1992-020\">Nature Conservation Act 1992<\/a> requiring the department to develop an integrated and comprehensive conservation strategy for the whole of the state.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><em><em>The department previously developed a strategy which it never implemented.&nbsp; Because it has no strategy, its efforts in managing threatened species lack purpose, direction and co ordination.&nbsp; The department has not determined its priorities, clear action areas or measurable targets for the recovery of threatened species and habitats.<\/em><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><em><em>The lack of strategy also makes it difficult for government, researchers and the community to clearly understand what the department does across its programs, why it does it, and what it is trying to achieve.<\/em><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">These are key findings, which should have provided an immediate injunction for government action and major mainstream media criticism.&nbsp;As usual, nothing transpired, the report might as well have been thrown into the nearest trash bin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">As a result of social media and considerable efforts by many disparate organisations, the message is getting out.&nbsp;The massive distrust of governments is one direct outcome but the ongoing damage calls for more than the loss of faith.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Australia may well be on the verge of a &nbsp;revolutionary&nbsp;movement which goes one large step further than a reform movement in seeking to overthrow the existing state and federal governments and to bring about&nbsp;a new way of life.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rebellion.earth\/\">Extinction Rebellion<\/a> is taking up the challenge.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">According to the<a href=\"https:\/\/rebellion.earth\/the-truth\/\"> website<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><em>&#8216;We are facing an unprecedented global emergency.&nbsp;Life on Earth is in crisis: scientists agree we have entered a period of abrupt climate breakdown, and we are in the midst of a mass extinction of our own making.&#8217;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Many concerned citizens may consider this movement extreme.&nbsp;But the grim reality of environmental destruction and the suffering visited on humans and wildlife is increasingly becoming an injunction for massive social change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/saylordotorg.github.io\/text_sociology-understanding-and-changing-the-social-world-comprehensive-edition\/s24-03-social-movements.html\">One of the essential conditions for collective behaviour<\/a> is structural strain or social problems&nbsp;that cause people to be angry and frustrated.&nbsp;Whatever the condition, the dissatisfaction it generates leads to shared discontent among some or most of the population&nbsp;that, then, may give rise to a social movement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Australians are, in general, patient people, with a considerable history of tolerance.&nbsp;But the lives of so many are now affected and the future of the nation\u2019s economy is increasingly at stake as a result of the state and federal governments\u2019 war against nature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;
