Apparently the $4.3 billion of existing capital was completely inadequate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-gtm-vis-first-on-screen-7770372_137=\"9802\" data-gtm-vis-total-visible-time-7770372_137=\"4000\" data-gtm-vis-has-fired-7770372_137=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Back in May 2016 Rupert wasn\u2019t so bullish, and NAH paid out $1.9 billion of redeemable preference shares, only to take up $1.2 billion of ordinary shares exactly 12 months later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-gtm-vis-first-on-screen-7770372_137=\"9802\" data-gtm-vis-total-visible-time-7770372_137=\"4000\" data-gtm-vis-has-fired-7770372_137=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">&nbsp;<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-504\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dingo.news\/voice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Murdoch-face.jpg?resize=620%2C349&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dingo.news\/voice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Murdoch-face.jpg?w=620&amp;ssl=1 620w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/dingo.news\/voice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Murdoch-face.jpg?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" data-gtm-vis-first-on-screen-7770372_137=\"9802\" data-gtm-vis-total-visible-time-7770372_137=\"4000\" data-gtm-vis-has-fired-7770372_137=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><sub>Rupert Murdoch&#8217;s favourite number in the tax column is zero.&nbsp;<cite class=\"_23SOU\">Bloomberg<\/cite><\/sub><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><cite class=\"_23SOU\"><\/cite>It&#8217;s a bit of a rollercoaster. News has a long history of intragroup loans in different currencies, which it has redeemed at times when the exchange rates create tax losses here \u2013 in 2013 this produced<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/business\/media-and-marketing\/publishing\/news-corp-s-882m-blew-the-budget-20140217-ixs2c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">an $882 million tax refund<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">after a little tussle with the Tax Office.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Paying out the redeemable preference shares in 2016 and then raising new capital with share issues will be part of wider transactions. The reasons are unfathomable, but as Monaco resident <strong>Richard Wiesener<\/strong> would put it, it looks like a three-letter word that begins with T and ends with X. And it doesn\u2019t stand for tuxedo.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"ztzrw\">\n<div class=\"_3t7hh\">\n<div class=\"_1kIOl\">\n<section id=\"endOfArticle\" class=\"_3PsH9\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Of course, it\u2019s a bit awkward doing a little tax engineering like this, just days before the start of an election when the Labor Party has been accusing News of tax avoidance. But it does all make the issue rather pertinent.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">So how much tax does News Corp Australia pay?<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-gtm-vis-first-on-screen-7770372_137=\"47503\" data-gtm-vis-total-visible-time-7770372_137=\"4000\" data-gtm-vis-has-fired-7770372_137=\"1\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Looking at cashflow, in 2018 NAH made $162 million in cash payments for tax. But that includes REA Group, its 61.6 per cent subsidiary, which paid three-quarters, or $124 million, of that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">It also includes News Corp\u2019s 65 per cent owned NXE Australia, which owns Foxtel and Fox Sports Australia and paid $10.4 million cash tax.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And then NAH\u2019s 2018 tax was boosted by that<\/span> <span style=\"color: #800000;\"><a style=\"color: #800000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/news\/policy\/tax\/news-corp-warms-to-the-tax-office-after-81-million-tax-deal-20180925-h15ue3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">$80 million tax settlement<\/a><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">with the ATO in August 2017. That included $20 million in current tax paid for previous years.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">On top of all that there\u2019s the withholding tax NAH pays on interest it pays to a News Corp associate offshore, which News likes to lump in with income tax.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 20px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Once we weed through all that we&#8217;re left with core operations for 2018. Removing all those settlements and subsidiary businesses, you end up with Rupert&#8217;s favourite number.
